Assessing the Best Treatment Path for Patients

Beth Faiman talks about the excitement of new medications but the challenge of getting to a standard of care that includes these new drugs.

I am a nurse practitioner with a PhD. My primary role, although I do enjoy research and I do conduct research, is to care for patients in the clinic. I'm integral to the diagnosis and management of multiple myeloma.

When a patient comes to me and they're either a newly diagnosed patient or a relapsing patient, then we have that discussion, "What's the best drug for you in this situation?" I give them the information from the clinical trials. I take into account their overall fitness and health.

I take into account their preferences. Some people want to travel and visit family. They don't want to be tied down to IVs all the time. We really work together. That's really an important role that I have, I think, because I help them get the drugs they need which are best for them.
